Yakushi-ji is one of Naras great classical temples, founded in the age when the Japanese court was shaping Buddhism into state culture. Its balanced layout, pagodas, and revered Yakushi triad make it feel more architectural and ceremonial than many smaller temple stops.
It sits away from the deer-park cluster, which is part of its appeal. Combine it with Toshodai-ji for a quieter western Nara itinerary that shows the old capital beyond Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha.
