Fukusaya Castella

Fukusaya has made castella — Nagasaki's distinctive Portuguese-derived sponge cake — since 1624, almost as long as Dejima existed. The flagship shop on the foot of the Higashiyamate slope is a wooden machiya with gold paper lining the entrance. Castella is sold in long, neatly boxed bars sliced into rectangular pieces; a single bar lasts a couple of weeks unrefrigerated, which is why it is the classic Nagasaki souvenir to take home. The Fukusaya version is slightly drier and less sweet than its main rival Bunmeido. Several smaller branches around the city.
