Inaugurated in 2011 and named after Sharif Hussein bin Ali — the leader of the Arab Revolt of 1916 and great-grandfather of the current Jordanian king — this is Aqaba's largest mosque and one of the most visible landmarks in the city. The building is faced in white marble, with four slender minarets and a single central dome trimmed in dark grey.
The mosque is fully open to non-Muslim visitors outside prayer times — a notable contrast to many Jordanian mosques. Modest dress is required (long sleeves, long trousers or skirt, and headscarves for women, which are provided at the door). The prayer hall is striking for its scale and quiet; calligraphic panels in marble inlay run around the walls. Free entry; donations welcome.
