The Maronite Cathedral of St. George stands near Martyrs' Square, built in 1767 and badly damaged during the civil war. The restoration revealed archaeological layers visible in the basement: Roman, Byzantine, and medieval remains from the successive cities that have stood on this spot. The museum underneath the cathedral is free to enter and provides a striking visual record of Beirut's long history.
