The Egg

The Egg is a half-built, war-scarred modernist cinema that has become one of Beirut's defining ruins. Its bulging concrete dome sits incongruously next to the gleaming new towers of downtown, with rusted reinforcement bars sticking out where the rest of the complex was never built.

It is closed and unsafe to enter, but you can walk right up to it from Martyrs' Square. For an unromantic stretch of post-war architecture it has become a quiet symbol of unfinished business — equally beloved by architects, protesters, and anyone who wants a single image to explain modern Lebanon.

A story
Designed by the Lebanese architect Joseph Philippe Karam in the 1960s as part of an ambitious commercial complex, the cinema was caught on the Green Line during the civil war and never finished. During the 2019 protests it briefly reopened as a self-managed cultural space.
