The Krishna Mandir stands at the western edge of Patan Durbar Square and is one of the few Hindu temples in the Valley built entirely in stone rather than brick and timber. Constructed in 1637 by King Siddhi Narsingh Malla, it rises in three tiers in the shikhara style — a form more typical of North India — rather than the pagoda style that dominates the square. The stone frieze running around the first floor depicts scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. At dusk, devotees crowd the square with flower offerings, and the sound of bells fills the courtyard.
