Mahaboudha Temple is one of Patan's most distinctive shrines, a terracotta tower covered with hundreds of small Buddha images. Its brickwork gives it a completely different texture from the stone and timber temples around Durbar Square.
The temple is close enough to include on a wider Patan walk, but it rewards a slower look. Step back to read the whole vertical form, then move closer for the repeating Buddha figures and the craft in the fired clay. It is compact, memorable, and very Newari.
