Patan Museum

Consistently rated the best museum in Nepal, the Patan Museum occupies a beautifully restored wing of the old royal palace on Durbar Square. The collection focuses on Hindu and Buddhist metalwork, sculpture, and ritual objects, but what sets it apart is the quality of the labelling — every piece is explained in its cultural context. Bronze deities, ceremonial vessels, architectural fragments, and painted manuscripts are displayed in rooms that retain the original carved windows and courtyard views. Even if museums aren't usually your priority, this one is worth the entry fee.

A story
The museum occupies the Mul Chowk wing of the old Malla royal palace. After the 1996 restoration — funded by Austria — it became the first museum in Nepal to fully contextualise its collection, explaining iconography and ritual use alongside each object. The carved peacock window inside the courtyard is original 17th-century work and is considered one of the finest examples of Newari woodcarving anywhere in the Valley.
