Kumbheshwar Temple

One of only two five-storied pagodas in the Kathmandu Valley — the other is the Nyatapola in Bhaktapur — Kumbheshwar is dedicated to Shiva and stands in a large compound about 200 metres north of Durbar Square. The temple dates to 1392, making it one of the oldest in Patan. Two ponds in the courtyard are said to be fed by underground water from the holy lake at Gosaikunda, high in the Himalayas. During the August Janai Purnima festival the compound fills with pilgrims who come to bathe here instead of making the high-altitude trek.
