Taunsa Sharif

Punjab pilgrimage town where a Sufi shrine stands near the Indus-side Taunsa Barrage wetland

Taunsa Sharif is a small town in the Dera Ghazi Khan district of Punjab, set in the arid plains east of the Sulaiman Mountains. It draws visitors as a site of Sufi pilgrimage — the town is named after the revered saint Hazrat Syed Ahmad Sultan, and his shrine is the focal point of the old town. The Taunsa Barrage on the Indus River, a few kilometres south of town, is an engineering landmark, a Ramsar-designated wetland, and one of the best places in Pakistan to spot the rare Indus river dolphin.

Things to Do

Taunsa Sharif is primarily a pilgrimage town, and the shrine of Hazrat Syed Ahmad Sultan is the reason most visitors come. The Taunsa Barrage on the Indus, a few kilometres south, is the other major draw — both for its engineering importance and for the rare Indus dolphins that live beneath it.
