Hapao is in the municipality of Hungduan, about an hour's drive west of Banaue town, and is the most photographed of the western terrace clusters. The terraces here are walled in stone and unusually wide; from the viewpoint above the village they fan out across a broad valley with the river running through the middle. A hot spring at the base of the village is a popular post-hike soak — it is rough and undeveloped, with concrete pools fed by a natural source.
Hapao is often combined with a day trip from Banaue. You need a private vehicle or a hired tricycle; there is no regular jeepney. The drive is rough but the road is paved most of the way. Allow a full day if you also stop at the Hungduan Bogyah hot springs and walk down into the terraces.
