Calbayog rewards travellers who go looking for outdoor adventure. The interior of western Samar is one of the wildest forested regions in the Philippines, full of waterfalls and caves; the coast has decent grey-sand and white-sand beaches; and the town centre offers the Spanish-era Saints Peter and Paul Cathedral and the small Samar Archaeological Museum. The annual Sarakiki-Hadang Festival in September is one of the more striking regional festivals, with dancers in rooster costume parading through the city in honour of Our Lady of the Nativity.
