Damyang

South Jeolla bamboo town known for forest walks, scholar gardens, and slow local food.

Asia > South Korea > Damyang

Damyang is South Korea's bamboo town, a green day trip north of Gwangju where the main pleasures are walking slowly and eating well. Bamboo is not just decoration here: it shaped local craft, festivals, food, and the way the town sells itself to Koreans looking for an easy country escape.

The centrepiece is Juknokwon, a planted bamboo forest on the edge of town, but Damyang works because the bamboo is only the start. The Metasequoia-lined Road gives you a very different kind of tree tunnel, while Soswaewon Garden preserves the quieter ideal of a Joseon scholar retreat, with pavilions, water, stone, and shade arranged so carefully that it feels unarranged.

Come for a full day rather than a quick photo stop. Walk the forest paths in the morning, eat tteokgalbi or noodles by the stream, then head out to Soswaewon when the tour groups thin. Damyang is polished and sometimes busy, but it has a clear identity and enough good anchors to justify leaving Gwangju for the day.
