The Chinese Furniture Museum in Taoyuan holds what is probably Taiwan's most significant collection of classical Chinese furniture — hardwood pieces spanning the Ming and Qing dynasties, including chairs, tables, cabinets, and screens made from huanghuali (rosewood) and zitan (purple sandalwood). The collection documents the evolution of Chinese furniture design over six centuries and is well presented with good contextual information.
This is an unusual institution — furniture museums are rare anywhere, and one focused specifically on Chinese classical pieces is rarer still. The quality of the collection is genuinely impressive, and for anyone interested in Chinese decorative arts or craft history, it's a better use of time than most of Taoyuan's tourist options. The museum is near the city center and free or low-cost to enter.
