Osman and Orhan Tombs

The tombs of Osman I and Orhan I stand on the terrace in Tophane, looking out over the city the first Ottoman sultans seized from the Byzantines. They are modest by later Ottoman standards — silver-grilled cenotaphs in small domed rooms — but their historical weight is considerable. This is the dynasty's starting point.

Osman I's tomb occupies what was originally a Byzantine chapel (Ayios Elias), converted after the Ottoman conquest. Orhan's tomb is in the adjacent building. The terrace between them is one of the best viewpoints in Bursa, particularly in the late afternoon when the city below is catching the last light. The surrounding park is well kept and peaceful, and a popular spot for locals in the evening.

A story
Osman I, founder of the Ottoman dynasty, died in 1326 just as Bursa fell to his son Orhan — he never saw the city he spent his life trying to capture. His body was buried in Bursa as he had requested, in a Byzantine baptistery that was converted into a mausoleum. The current structure dates from 1868; earthquake and time destroyed the original, but the continuity of the site makes it one of the oldest hallowed spots in the Ottoman world.
