Tophane is Bursa's oldest neighbourhood, built on a rise above the city centre that was the original seat of the Ottoman state in the 14th century. It takes its name from the Ottoman cannon foundry (tophane) that once operated here. The area is quieter and less commercial than the bazaar district below, with Ottoman-era wooden houses on steep lanes and some of the most atmospheric streets in the city.
The Osman and Orhan Tombs at the top of the hill mark the burial places of the first two Ottoman sultans — modest structures compared to later Ottoman mausoleums, but historically significant as the origin point of the dynasty. The terrace in front offers panoramic views over the city and the plain. The Muradiye Complex is a 10-minute walk away through the neighbourhood's residential streets.
