Edremit

Northern Aegean town below Mount Ida, with olive country, beaches, ruins, and thermal villages nearby.

Edremit is the inland service town for the Gulf of Edremit on Turkey's northern Aegean coast. The town itself is workaday, but the district around it is rich: olive groves, beach resorts, thermal villages, ancient sites, and the forested slopes of Kaz Dağı, the Mount Ida of classical legend.

This is not the polished Aegean of Bodrum or Çeşme. Edremit feels more local and spread out, with Akçay, Güre, Altınoluk, Burhaniye, and Ören forming a chain of coast and hillside settlements around the gulf. That sprawl is part of the point: one day can mix a mountain waterfall, an ethnography museum, a swim, and a look at ongoing excavations from the ancient world.

Use Edremit as a practical base if you have a car or are moving by bus along the Istanbul-Izmir route. Without transport, the best sights are harder to stitch together.
