Öküz Mehmed Pasha Caravanserai

The Öküz Mehmed Pasha Caravanserai is a classical Ottoman trading inn, built in 1618 by the grand vizier whose nickname meant 'the ox'. Caravans of camels and traders pulled into the central courtyard, unloaded their goods into the ground-floor warehouses, and slept in the rooms above. The building is a thick-walled rectangle of dark stone with a single arched gate, and it dominates the harbour-side square of the old town.

It was restored in the 1960s and has since served as a hotel and event venue. The courtyard is open to the public during the day and is one of the most evocative interior spaces in Kuşadası — cool, shaded, and as quiet as you can find anywhere in the old town in summer.
