The most popular day trip from Hoi An is to My Son, a World Heritage Site about 40 km southwest of town. A valley of red-brick Cham towers and sanctuaries built between the 7th and 13th centuries, My Son was the religious and political capital of the Cham kingdom and is often compared to Angkor, Bagan, and Borobudur in scale and significance. Most guesthouses arrange morning transport; the trip takes half a day.
The beach at Cua Dai, 5 km from the Old Town centre, is easily reached by bicycle along flat roads through rice paddies. Bicycle rental is widely available in town.
