Tenterfield is a high-country town on the New England Tablelands, close to the Queensland border and surrounded by granite, waterfalls, and bushranger country. It is also tied to Australia's Federation story: Sir Henry Parkes delivered his 1889 Tenterfield Oration here, helping push the colonies toward union.
The strict test is easy here because the town is not relying on one museum. Bald Rock National Park is the headline, with one of Australia's great granite domes. Boonoo Boonoo National Park adds waterfalls, swimming holes, and forest. In town, the Tenterfield Railway Museum keeps the old Great Northern line visible, and the School of Arts gives the place its national-history weight.
Tenterfield is best with a car and a full day. Spend the morning on granite, the afternoon by water or in the railway precinct, and the evening in a town that still feels like a borderland rather than a highway service stop.
