Wagga Wagga, almost always shortened to Wagga, is the largest inland city in New South Wales and the practical capital of the Riverina. It sits on the Murrumbidgee River between Sydney and Melbourne, surrounded by wheat country, defence bases, university life, and long, hot summers.
This is not a dramatic town at first glance. The pleasure is in the way the city uses the river and its civic centre. Wagga Beach gives the place a relaxed inland-summer identity, while the cultural precinct around Wollundry Lagoon has one of regional Australia's more interesting art collections.
The National Art Glass Gallery is the standout: a serious public collection of contemporary studio glass in a city better known for sport and agriculture. The Botanic Gardens and Museum of the Riverina round out a day without needing to rush.
Wagga works well as a break on the inland route through southern New South Wales. Give it a day if you like regional galleries, river walks, and towns that feel more lived-in than polished.
