Museum of Central Australia

The Museum of Central Australia in the Araluen Cultural Precinct covers the natural and cultural history of the Red Centre — geology, palaeontology, fossils, and the ecology of the arid zone — alongside collections relating to the history of European settlement in Central Australia. The collection of megafauna fossils from the Pleistocene era is particularly strong: giant kangaroos, diprotodons, and the other remarkable animals that inhabited this landscape before human arrival.

The precinct also includes the Araluen Arts Centre galleries and a transport museum with a collection of historic vehicles used in Central Australia. It is a half-day's worth of material if you cover all the venues. The precinct is on Larapinta Drive, about 4 km from Todd Mall.

A story
The museum holds one of Australia's most significant meteorite collections — appropriate given that Central Australia has been the landing site of several major meteorite impacts. The Henbury Meteorite Craters, 130 km southwest of Alice Springs, were created around 4,200 years ago, and fragments from the impact are displayed in the museum's natural history gallery.
