Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary

Boardwalk reserve through mangroves and wetlands on the Maroochy River.

Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary protects a quieter side of the Sunshine Coast: mangroves, paperbark, saltmarsh, and river-edge habitat rather than surf beaches. A boardwalk and short trails make the wetlands accessible without needing specialist gear, and birdlife is often the main reward.

The sanctuary is best in the cooler parts of the day, when the light is good and wildlife is more active. It works as a gentle nature stop between beach towns and gives useful ecological context for the Maroochy River system that sits behind so much of the coast's development.
