Winton

Remote Outback Queensland town of dinosaurs, Waltzing Matilda, and wide red-dirt horizons

Winton is a small Outback Queensland town with a reach far beyond its size. It sits in red, open country west of Longreach, and it has two strong claims on the Australian imagination: the story of "Waltzing Matilda" and some of the country's richest dinosaur finds.

The town itself is compact, with wide streets, pubs, and a dry heat that makes shade feel important. The Waltzing Matilda Centre is the cultural anchor in town, while the Australian Age of Dinosaurs sits on a mesa outside it, looking over country where sauropod bones still come out of the ground.

Winton is not a casual detour from the coast. It rewards travellers who are already moving through the outback and want a place with a proper story, a strange landscape, and enough sights to justify stopping for a full day.
