Yeppoon

Capricorn Coast beach town facing Keppel Bay, with island ferries and volcanic headland walks nearby.

Yeppoon is the main beach town of Queensland's Capricorn Coast, about 40 km east of Rockhampton. It faces Keppel Bay rather than the open surf, so the mood is gentler than the big-name resort strips farther south and north. The foreshore has been rebuilt around a lagoon pool, water play, lawns, palms, and cafes, with the Keppel Islands sitting out on the horizon.

The town itself is pleasant rather than spectacular, but its setting lifts it above an ordinary seaside stop. Ferries to Great Keppel Island leave from nearby Rosslyn Bay, putting white beaches, reef snorkelling, and island walking tracks within an easy day trip. South of town, the volcanic headlands of Capricorn Coast National Park give short walks with proper views over the bay.

Yeppoon also works as the coast break for Rockhampton. You can spend the morning among Rockhampton's heritage buildings or at the Capricorn Caves, then be eating fish and chips by the water in Yeppoon by late afternoon. It is not a place to cross Australia for on its own, but if you are already in Central Queensland, it is worth giving a day rather than treating it as a fuel-and-swim stop.

Beaches

The beaches around Yeppoon are calm, open, and backed by low hills rather than high-rise resort blocks. Main Beach is the easiest walk from town, while Kemp Beach and Mulambin sit farther south toward the national park headlands.

Getting There

Yeppoon is about 40 km northeast of Rockhampton by road. Rockhampton has the nearest airport, long-distance bus stops, and rail services on the Queensland coast line. From Rockhampton, local buses and taxis run to Yeppoon, but a car makes the coast and national park stops much easier.

Ferries for Great Keppel Island leave from Rosslyn Bay, a short drive south of central Yeppoon.
