Mole Creek is a small farming town under the Great Western Tiers, west of Deloraine and north of the wilder country around the Walls of Jerusalem. The town itself is quiet, but the limestone landscape around it gives the place a real reason to stop.
The main draw is the cave country. Marakoopa Cave has glow-worms and underground streams, while King Solomons Cave is smaller and known for its formations. Together they make Mole Creek more than a gateway on the road to Cradle Mountain.
Add Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary, a serious place for seeing Tasmanian devils and other native animals, and the short walk to Alum Cliffs, and you have a strong one-day stop. This is rural Tasmania at its best: practical, green, and close to much stranger country underground.
