Wynyard is a small town on Tasmania's northwest coast, set where the Inglis River meets Bass Strait and the flat-topped bulk of Table Cape rises just beyond town. It has an airport and practical services, but the travel appeal is coastal: beaches, cliff views, tulip fields in spring, and an unusually good little visitor centre.
Table Cape is the anchor. Drive up for the lighthouse, farm country, and sea views, or time the trip for spring when the tulip fields turn the cape into blocks of colour. Back near town, Fossil Bluff adds geology and beach wandering, while Wonders of Wynyard gives a surprisingly distinctive stop for car and local-history enthusiasts.
Wynyard is not a major destination, and it does not pretend to be. It is best as a slow coastal day on a northwest Tasmania trip, especially if the weather is clear or the tulips are out.
