A picturesque alpine town in northeast Victoria, Bright sits in the Ovens Valley surrounded by mountains that blaze with autumn colour each April. The town's main street is lined with deciduous trees — oaks, maples, and elms planted over a century ago — and the autumn display draws visitors from across the state. It is a popular base for skiing at Mt Hotham and Falls Creek in winter, and for cycling, bushwalking, and paragliding the rest of the year.
The Murray to Mountains rail trail passes through town and is one of Victoria's best cycling routes, following the old railway line through the valley on sealed paths with gentle gradients. In summer, the Ovens River running through town has swimming holes that are perfect for cooling off, and Canyon Walk along the river gorge is an easy stroll through native bush. Paragliding from Mystic Hill, just above town, is a local specialty, with tandem flights available for beginners.
Bright has developed a surprisingly good food and wine scene for a small country town. The breweries and cafes along the main strip are consistently good, and the nearby King Valley wine region produces excellent prosecco and Italian-style varietals. The Bright Autumn Festival in late April is the peak event, though the town is busy year-round thanks to the ski season running from June to September.
