Kununurra

Eastern Kimberley base on the Ord River, close to Mirima National Park, Lake Argyle, and the road to Purnululu.

Kununurra is the eastern gateway to the Kimberley, a practical base town on the Ord River near the Northern Territory border. It has flights, supplies, tours, and the last reliable services before long drives into red-rock country, which makes it more useful than its modest size suggests.

The town sits in a striking irrigated pocket. Sandalwood and melon farms, broad water, and green lawns feel almost improbable against the surrounding dry savannah and boab trees. The Ord River scheme changed the landscape, and Lake Kununurra now runs right beside town.

Kununurra's best close sight is Mirima National Park, a small sandstone range often described as a pocket version of the Bungle Bungles. Kelly's Knob gives quick sunset views over town, while Lake Argyle is the obvious half-day or full-day trip.

Most travellers use Kununurra for logistics: stocking up, joining a scenic flight, or breaking the trip between Broome, Darwin, and Purnululu National Park. The dry season, roughly May to September, is the comfortable time to come.
