Nukulau Island

A small coral cay about ten kilometres east of Suva, reached by a thirty-minute boat ride from the seafront. Nukulau has a white sand beach, clear water, and a few picnic shelters — for a Suva resident it is the closest thing to a proper tropical beach day without leaving the capital.

The island is uninhabited and has no facilities. Take everything you need with you — food, drinking water, shade, and a snorkel — and check tide and weather before booking a boat. Most cruise operators run day trips from the Royal Suva Yacht Club marina.

A story
Nukulau served as a leper colony in the late 19th century and, more notoriously, as the prison island for the 2000 coup leader George Speight from 2001 to 2014.
