The Coral Coast along the southern shore of Viti Levu is the obvious escape — two hours along the Queen's Road from Suva, with reef snorkelling, dance shows at the resorts, and proper sandy beaches in a way Suva itself simply cannot offer.
Closer to home, Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, Nukulau Island, and the Pacific Harbour adventure operators 50 km west all make good single-day excursions. For something more ambitious, drive up to the highland village of Navala, in the Nausori Highlands, where most of the houses are still traditional thatched bures.
