The Bridle Path climbs over the Port Hills between Lyttelton and the Christchurch side of the ridge. It was the route early European settlers used to get from the port to the plains, and the name is literal: the track was steep enough that riders had to lead horses by the bridle over the worst sections.
Today it is a short, hard walk with a strong sense of place. The reward is not only the exercise, but the switch in views from Lyttelton Harbour to the Christchurch basin, plus the memorials and information panels that tie the track to Canterbury's settlement story.
