The Awaroa/Godley Head Loop Track gives Christchurch one of its best coastal walks without requiring a long trip out of the city. The route crosses open Port Hills country above sheer cliffs, with views over Lyttelton Harbour, Pegasus Bay, and the outer edge of Banks Peninsula.
The walk has more than scenery. Remains of the Godley Head coastal defence battery, old military buildings, baches, and protected wildlife habitat break up the ridgeline. It is exposed in wind and sun, so carry layers and water even though the track is straightforward by New Zealand standards.
