Christchurch Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens occupy 30 hectares within the larger 164-hectare Hagley Park and together they form one of the best urban green spaces in the southern hemisphere. The Avon River curves through both, willows trailing into the water, and the combination of formal garden beds, rolling meadows, and specimen trees creates a place that feels genuinely large even when it is busy. The rose garden is spectacular in December and January; the New Zealand native plant collections are interesting year-round.

Hagley Park itself is more than a garden backdrop — it is where the city runs, plays cricket, walks dogs, and holds its markets. After an earthquake that tore up so much of the urban fabric, its undamaged permanence became even more important to Christchurch. The gardens are free to enter, open daily, and include several glasshouses with tropical and arid collections. The café near the main entrance is reliable for a post-walk coffee. The Antigua Boat Sheds, where you can rent a punt or a rowboat, are on the Avon just outside the gardens' boundary.
