Viaduct Harbour

The Viaduct Harbour is the beating heart of Auckland's waterfront. What was once a rough working wharf is now a marina lined with superyachts, bars, and seafood restaurants, with the harbour in front and the city rising behind. It is at its best on a summer evening when half the city decamps here for a drink on the water.

The adjacent Wynyard Quarter, developed in the years since the Viaduct's makeover, has added a more residential and market-oriented character to the waterfront strip — the weekly Wynyard Quarter Farmers Market is worth a stop on a Saturday morning.

A story
The Viaduct Basin was transformed from a working fish-processing wharf into an international waterfront precinct to host the America's Cup in 1999–2000, when Team New Zealand defended the Cup here. The infrastructure built for the event — the superyacht berths, the widened promenades, the restaurants — became the template for Auckland's waterfront renewal.
