The Augustiner monks of Mülln have been brewing beer here since 1621 and serving it in a complex of barrel-vaulted halls and a tree-shaded garden that together seat about 1,400 drinkers. The system is unique: you collect a stoneware mug, rinse it under a stone fountain, and queue at the wooden hatch where a monk fills it from the barrel.
Food comes from a row of small stalls in the lobby — pretzels, smoked fish, sausages, cheese, schnitzel sandwiches — which you carry to your table. The beer garden under the chestnut trees, open in summer, is one of the great evenings out in Salzburg.
