Grinzing Cemetery

Leafy hillside cemetery where Gustav Mahler is buried

Address An den langen Lüssen 33, Grinzing

A quiet, leafy cemetery on the slopes above Grinzing, best known as the resting place of the composer Gustav Mahler. His grave is marked by a spare, modernist headstone designed by the architect Josef Hoffmann, carrying only his name — Mahler reportedly said that those who came to look for him would know who he was, and those who didn't need not know.

Several other artists and writers lie here too, and the setting among the vineyards and the Vienna Woods is genuinely peaceful. It makes a contemplative half-hour either side of an afternoon among the Heurigen. The grave is signposted from the entrance.
