Church of St Hippolytus

Romanesque-Gothic town church with medieval frescoes and ancient tower

The main church of Zell am See's old town, St Hippolytus has stood here since the 8th century, though most of what you see today reflects Romanesque origins refined by Gothic additions over the following centuries. The tower is among the oldest surviving structures in town — solid and square against the alpine skyline.

Inside, the medieval stone carvings and remnants of painted frescoes are the real draws. They're not lavish, but they're genuine and atmospheric, a contrast to the ski-resort modernity just outside the door. Worth stepping in for a quiet few minutes even if churches aren't usually your thing.
