Day Trips

Grossglockner High Alpine Road (open May–November) is one of Austria's great scenic drives, climbing through 36 hairpin bends to views of Austria's highest peak (3,798m) and the Pasterze glacier. The road starts at Bruck an der Glocknerstrasse, about 15km from Zell am See. Allow a full day to do it properly.

Krimml Waterfalls (55km west, in Hohe Tauern National Park) are among the highest waterfalls in Europe — a three-stage cascade of around 380 metres. A well-maintained path winds up alongside them. The small town of Krimml at the base is the starting point.

Salzburg (80km north, about 1 hour by train) is a natural day trip: the old town, Hohensalzburg Fortress, the Mozarteum, and the markets repay a full day. The train is the easiest option — no parking hassle.

Saalfelden and Leogang (20km north) offer a mining museum in a former silver mine with period equipment, and good hiking and biking trails. The jazz festival at Saalfelden in August is one of the best in the Alps.
