Zell am See has two distinct high seasons. The ski season runs roughly from December to April; the Schmittenhöhe usually has reliable snow from late December, while the Kitzsteinhorn glacier allows year-round skiing. The resort is busiest over Christmas, New Year, and school holidays in February.
Summer (June to September) is the second high season, focused on the lake, hiking, and cycling. July and August are warmest, with temperatures around 20°C. The lake is swimmable from June into September. Shoulder months — May, early June, October, November — are quieter, prices drop, and the landscape (spring wildflowers, autumn colour) has its own appeal. Some restaurants and cable cars may be closed in May and November between seasons.
