The Kitzsteinhorn, 8km south of Zell am See above the village of Kaprun, rises to 3,203m and offers the only year-round ski skiing in the region. The glacier retains enough snow for skiing even in summer, making it a popular destination for racing teams in the off-season and for holidaymakers who want to ski in July. The cable cars from Kaprun are modern and fast; the upper station has a panoramic restaurant.
Together with the Schmittenhöhe above Zell am See, the Kitzsteinhorn forms the Europa Sports Region, and a combined lift pass covers both. In winter the two mountains offer a substantial skiing area — around 130km of marked runs — at different altitudes and with different character. Kaprun village itself is quieter than Zell am See and has its own historic castle above the valley.
