Ganja Gate

The Ganja Gate is the largest of the three surviving gates of the eighteenth-century fortress wall that once encircled Shusha. It sits on the northern edge of the old town, controlling what was historically the road to Ganja, and consists of two squat stone towers flanking a pointed-arch passage.

Built in the 1750s during the founding of the Karabakh Khanate, the gate was the main approach used by caravans heading north out of the highlands. Long stretches of the city wall on either side are still standing — a good walk if you want to get a sense of how Panah Ali Khan's fortified town was laid out.
