House of Khurshidbanu Natavan

The stone mansion on Khan Square belonged to Khurshidbanu Natavan, daughter of the last Karabakh khan and a poet whose verses are still recited at school in Azerbaijan today. Two storeys of arched windows look out over the square, with a long upper-floor balcony where Natavan held her literary salon in the 1860s and 1870s.

The building was looted and burned during the early 1990s, restored in the 2010s, and is now a museum tracing Natavan's life and the cultural history of the khanate. The collection includes period furniture, manuscripts, and a small display of her writing in both Persian and Azerbaijani Turki.

A story
Natavan was the last princess of the Karabakh Khanate and one of the most celebrated Azerbaijani poets of the nineteenth century. She also paid for the city's first piped water supply in the 1870s, and a small marble plaque near the central spring still records the gift.
