Shusha is a city in active reconstruction, which creates an unusual visitor experience: historic mosques and palaces are being meticulously restored alongside new development. The old city rewards slow walking — the panoramic views from the fortress walls and the Jidyr Düzü plateau are the finest in the Karabakh highlands.
Note that visiting the Karabakh region, including Shusha, requires advance registration with Azerbaijani authorities. Check current entry requirements before travelling, as procedures have continued to evolve since Azerbaijani control was re-established in 2020.
