Vagif Mausoleum

The Vagif Mausoleum honours Molla Panah Vagif, the great 18th-century Azerbaijani poet and statesman who served as vizier of the Karabakh Khanate and transformed Azerbaijani literature by bringing vernacular language and romantic themes into classical poetry. His tomb is one of the most visited cultural sites in Shusha.

The mausoleum is a cylindrical stone tower with a conical roof in the traditional Azerbaijani style, set on a rocky bluff with views over the surrounding landscape. It was restored in the Soviet era and again after the recent conflict. Vagif is considered a founding figure of Azerbaijani national literature, and the mausoleum draws visitors from across the country who come to pay respects at his tomb.

A story
Molla Panah Vagif was the vizier of the Karabakh Khanate and the most celebrated Azerbaijani poet of the 18th century. He was executed on the orders of a new ruler in 1797 — just two days before Russian forces arrived that would have saved him. His mausoleum was destroyed multiple times over the centuries and rebuilt. The current structure, restored in the 1980s, has become a place of literary pilgrimage.
