Maasmechelen is a municipality in the Belgian province of Limburg, on the Meuse river not far from the Dutch and German borders. The area is best known as a shopping destination — Maasmechelen Village is one of Belgium's major outlet shopping centres, drawing visitors from across the region. Beyond retail, the surrounding Hoge Kempen National Park offers walking and cycling through heathland and forest, making it a reasonable base for outdoor exploration in Belgian Limburg.

Getting There

Maasmechelen is about 80 kilometres east of Brussels and 30 kilometres north of Liège. By car, take the E313 motorway east from Antwerp or the E40/E313 from Brussels. The nearest major international airport is Brussels Airport, roughly 90 minutes by car; Maastricht Aachen Airport is closer at under 30 minutes.

By public transport, Genk is the nearest train station, about 10 kilometres away. From Genk, buses run toward Maasmechelen. Maasmechelen Village operates dedicated shuttle bus services from Liège, Hasselt, Maastricht, and Aachen on weekends and shopping days — check their website for current timetables. The shuttle option is particularly useful for visitors coming from Maastricht, which is just across the Dutch border.
