Žedno

Žedno sits on the ridge running along the spine of Čiovo, high enough to catch the breeze and far enough from the coast to feel genuinely apart from the summer crowds below. The village is old stone — dry-stone walls, narrow lanes, houses built tightly together against the wind. A few dozen families live here year-round, many with olive groves running down toward the shore on both sides of the island.

The village church, dedicated to Our Lady of Karmen, anchors the small square. It is modest from the outside, but the interior has a quiet dignity and the square in front looks out over the olive slopes toward the mainland. The walk up from Okrug Gornji takes about thirty minutes and is worth doing in the early morning when the light is soft and the path is cool.

From the ridge you can see both sides of the island at once: the open sea to the south and the passage between Čiovo and Trogir to the north. On a clear day, the islands of Šolta and Brač are visible on the horizon.

A story
The village name comes from the Croatian word for 'thirsty' — a reference to the dry limestone plateau on which it sits, where rainwater vanishes quickly through the rock and cisterns were once essential to survival.
