Makarska's main beach (Gradska plaža) runs for about two kilometres along the bay from the harbour to the eastern outskirts of town, a wide curve of fine pebbles and clear water with Biokovo rising vertically behind. The town side is busy in high summer — sunbeds, paddleboards for hire, bars at the back of the beach — and the further east you walk, the quieter and more pine-shaded it gets.
The water shelves gently. There are showers and toilets at intervals. Free, public access throughout.
