Podstrana

Dalmatian seaside community south of Split, strung along pebble beaches beneath pine woods and low hills.

Podstrana is a small community on the Dalmatian coast just south of Split, stretching for about 6 kilometres between the Zrnovnica stream and the Mutogras hill. The seafront is lined with accessible shingle and pebble beaches backed by Mediterranean pine woods and tamarisk trees, making it a popular escape from the city — you can be on the beach within 20 minutes of Split's old town.

The settlement is predominantly residential and tourist-oriented rather than a traditional Dalmatian village, but the quality of the coast and the proximity to Split make it a reasonable base for those who want beaches close at hand while still having easy access to the historic centre. The early Christian Church of St. Thecla, one of the oldest in Dalmatia, is the one genuine historical sight in the village.

Getting There

Podstrana is 10 km south of Split along the coastal road (D8). Local buses run frequently from Split's main bus station and the town centre, with stops along the coastal road through Podstrana. The journey takes 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. By taxi or rideshare from central Split, the journey is about 15 minutes.

The split cycle path connects Split's promenade to Podstrana and continues south — a pleasant 10-km ride along the coast on a dedicated path.

Things to Do

Podstrana's main asset is its coastline — a 6-kilometre stretch of accessible shingle and pebble beaches backed by pine forest, just 20 minutes from Split. The beaches are the draw; the rest of the town's appeal is in its role as a relaxed base for exploring the Dalmatian coast.
