Podgora is a small Dalmatian coastal town tucked between Split and Dubrovnik at the foot of the Biokovo mountain range. Its pebble beach slopes into exceptionally clear water, and the waterfront is marked by the Seagull's Wings monument — a striking concrete sculpture that has become the town's symbol.
The town makes a good base for exploring the Makarska Riviera. Podgora itself is quiet and unhurried, with a handful of hotels that somehow manage four times as many beds as the town has permanent residents. The Biokovo Nature Park rises directly behind the coast, offering hiking trails with dramatic views over the Adriatic and the islands. Above the modern seafront the abandoned stone old village is a half-hour walk into the past, and three kilometres up the shore is the long pebble beach at Tucepi.
